IK hand parenting
When parenting an IK hand together with a second object, it's usually the case that the hand is the parent of the other object, correct? At what point do you usually choose to parent them the other way around, so the object is the parent of the hand? Is it entirely based on where you want the pivot point to be? Or the size of the object you're parenting? Thoughts?

Gabriel Tovar -- Fox progress
i know i need to fix the timing of the tail. any other suggestions for fixin's?
Thursday, December 8, 2011
On the subject of relative size
Rowan Atkinson address this, among many other things in his dissection of comedy "Laughing Matters". Very well worth an hour of your time.
Reynaldo - small request
David, i found the lips-sync tutorial you did very helpful. I was hopping that you would do a short constraints video tutorial similar to what you were showing us on fixing the horses knee pole vector. Also one on how to bake and transfer animations from a Mocap rig to Morpheus or any other clean rig. It would be great if it were uploaded to Vimeo for future students to see.

INSTRUCTOR POST - feedback required
Post in the comments field of this post a couple of sentences about what worked with this course and what would you like to see changed. This is part of your class participation mark, so please participate.
This does not replace the AAU online feedback mechanism for your classes (please, do remember to fill those out for all of the courses you take). If there's any comment you'd rather make anonymously, you can do so there.
It's a way for you to give me some direct guidance on how to improve the class. Was the workload to heavy or too light? Were there topics that were not covered carefully enough (or not at all)? Are there things about the class you could have done without entirely?
Every course I teach is a product of the feedback from the students that came before you, so pay it forward and improve the quality of the class for the next group.
Thanks!
Dave

Reynaldo - abxPicker and zooShots Script
This is for Maya 2011 and up. It's sold on CreativeCrash, but a free copy of it was included with the Malcolm rig that was released to the public from an online school recently. With the permission from Adam Burke creator of abxPickers (i think). It let's you make shortcut selections from objects and you can create custom layouts along with image background. You can also have multiple tabs for the character. It helps when your rigs has a ton of controls and are hard to find on the model. It works with reference rigs but it must be setup with the original rig first. You can also create custom MEL button commands.
abxPicker

zooShots Just download the zooToolBox at the top of his page. The only annoying script that i don't install is zooAutoSave.MEL, but other than that use zooShots it lets you manage a scene that has a lot of cameras with ease. It also lets you build 4:3, 16:9, 1.85:1 ect. and custom aspect ratio bars for your camera.

Josh - Script to key selected channels on hotkey
Harry pointed out to me this script is the same as selecting channels and right clicking and pressing key selected, I just prefer it set on a hotkey (I set it to d). It was posted by sudipto1990@gmail.com in
actual script:
// Select the objects
string $myObjects [] = ` ls -sl`;
string $myAttr [] = ` channelBox -q -sma mainChannelBox`;
// start the loops
for ($myNode in $myObjects) {
for ($myNodeAttr in $myAttr) {
setKeyframe ( $myNode+"."+$myNodeAttr );
}}
Awesome Scripts
http://www.aaronkoressel.com/index.php?nav=tools
- Awesome scripts for animators, especially:
-ackSliceCurves - Clean way of inserting keys
-ackDeleteRedundant 1.1 - Basically a graph editor cleaner, deletes redundant keys.
-ackNegateKeys 1.3 -Clean way of flipping curves cleanly.
There are many more there that really help animators...

Hey everyone, I apologize for my absence today. I hate missing class.
With that being said, here is a playblast of my animation thus far.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9QOD6oKmxE&eurl=unknown&feature=player_embedded
I'm trying out a straight-ahead animation method. I kind of like it.
Obviously I really only focused on the jumping up to the trashcan. The second half of the animation is missing. I didn't get as far as I was hoping.
Over all I think it's a bit too fast. And the second jump feels goofy. I need to clean the poses and arcs.

Jack - Dino rig v4.xxxx
Sorry for the late post, I fixed some part of the Dino rig, including:
- took out the auto-foot flip when lifting the feet off the ground(If you want it back, just connect the SDK node of each toe joint back to the Set Driven Key animation node).
- Fixed the Left index toe that doesn't stay on the ground when using "Roll On Ball".
- Fixed the Left Ball rotation axis.
- Fixed the Left Middle toe inverse rotation.
- Changed the leg IK system
- Added new Toe joint to pin the feet on the ground when rotating the ankles.
- Added Ankle controls and Toe controls.
Warning!! - For anyone who want to use this rig, please use it with your own risk, because I'm not sure if I'd taken out anything that I'm not supposed to. But as far as I've seen, it still works fine.
The credit also goes to Heriyanto, he helped me fixing this rig too.

Rhett 1.4.3
A word to the wise: Before you start animating, delete the existing animation out of the rhett_v1_4_3.ma, or you won't be able to re-key those attributes. Which you will find annoying if you thought that you'd been keying them, but then maya didn't set keys for what you told it to.
Just, you know. FYI.
ADDITONALLY, grab rhett's root, and try to rotate him in x more than +/-180. Can't, right? What's the deal? Does anybody know why it stops there? Anybody?

Heriyanto - Dino Rigs
I'm still deciding between the 2 dino rigs that I've found.
First one is the raptor, which can be found on creative crash.

http://www.creativecrash.com/maya/downloads/character-rigs/c/dinorig
The other one is the one I got from 3D World magazine.

Few small problems with this one is there is not individual toe controls, and the fingers controls are not very flexible.

If you are posting on the blog remember to title it "Your Name - Topic" For example; anything I post as a student would be titled "David Latour - (topic)" Otherwise I cannot track your posting for participation marks. Be sure to put your name in the body text at the start of any comment as well.
Progress grades should be available end of day today, (thanks for your patience) check them out. If you have any questions about your grade you can make an appointment to go over them with me.

Keaton - Cat Reference
I particulary like this reference because its a locked off camera with two cats running in wheel.
The wheel has spokes that help visualize how far the cats move.
This one is also good, however the cat is dark and the interlacing hides the feet a bit.
But it meows while it runs and it is flippin' adorable.
And this one has great contrast. There is great stuff in the middle.

Welcome New Students
Welcome to the AAU Fall Semester of 2011 everyone!
This is a persistent online site I use to allow students in sessions of ANM 325 to solicit and offer feedback on their animation. A few important notes:
1. Conduct yourself here as you would in the class. Play nice with others and be supportive and constructive with your comments. Limit the posting to information relevant to the class.
2. I use participation here as part of your class participation mark. If you're shy this is a great way to be involved in the classroom discussion.
3. Title each post with your name. Your blogger ID may not be something I recognize, and you don't want to miss out on participation marks when you post here.
4. This blog is as helpful as you make it. Be active with comments, post your work regularly and take advantage of this venue. Monitor this site at lease once a week. I will use this as a forum to answer common questions, so you don't want to miss out.
Even If you're new to blogging you'll find this a pretty painless and straightforward process. If you have something from class you'd like to show: just playblast your work, click "new post" on the upper right corner of the screen and use the "add video" button on the right side of the upper menu of the new post interface.
I try to look in here regularly and offer critique and guidance as well. Welcome to the blog and have a great time.
