LiLi_Xia_Nico
Hi, everyone. This is my creature animation of Nico. Nico's front feet doesn't have the function of adjusting the heel without moving the feet as the rear feet. So to avoid breaking the structure, I have to use both feet and toes controlers to get to the pose I want. And I didn't use the FK of body, it's much more efficient to use IK, but, that also cost me extra time to keep hip and chest moving around matching with each other.

INSTRUCTOR POST - Welcome New Students!
Welcome to the AAU Fall Semester of 2012
This is a persistent online site I use to allow students in my class to solicit and offer feedback on their animation. There are a few important notes;
1. Conduct yourself here as you would in the class. Play nice with others and be supportive and constructive with your comments. Limit the posting to information relevant to the class.
2. I use participation here as part of your class participation mark. Participation accounts for 20% of your total grade! If you're shy this is a great way to be involved in the classroom discussion. You get points for posting your work or for giving feedback on other people’s animation.
3. Title each post with your name, for example: “David Latour: Blocking Pass 1”. Your blogger ID may not be something I recognize. You don't want to miss out on participation marks when you post here.
4. This blog is as helpful as you make it. Be active with comments, post your work regularly and take advantage of this venue. Monitor this site at least once a week. I will use this as a forum to make general announcements and answer common questions, so you don't want to miss out.
Even If you're new to blogging you'll find this a pretty painless and straightforward process. If you have something from class you'd like to show, use the following steps:
· Playblast your work (16:9 ratio, 640x360, convert to .mov, with H264 compression)
· Post the movie file on any video streaming site (YouTube, Vimeo)
· Copy the “embed HTML” from the streaming site
· In blogger click "new post" on the upper right corner of the screen and click on the "edit HTML" tab on the top right of the new post and paste the code in the window.
5. Blogger works best with Mozilla Firefox, or Google Chrome. If you have technical issues: try switching your browser. Make sure you login with the Google ID that you were invited with or you won’t be able to post or comment.
Every time someone adds a new post or comments on an existing one, I get a direct email. I try to look in here regularly and offer critique and guidance as well. This blog will be available as space allows, so you will be able to continue posting here after the end of term. (You may even see former students offering feedback here.)

That's it for Spring 2012! Thank you for your hard work and
enthusiasm. Please make sure you fill out the AAU online feedback forms.

A few tips to keep from getting rusty over the summer:
I've enjoyed watching your abilities evolve and improve over the term. I look forward to working with every one of you in the future. Graduating students: please keep in touch. Folks continuing their educational journey: make an office appointment with me in the next term.
Have a great summer everyone!

A few tips to keep from getting rusty over the summer:
- Join up with the S.L.A.W
folks on Facebook - student led animation workshops that will be
running over the summer. Fun feedback and animation exercises galore.
Huzzah!
- Pick a 3-5 sec audio clip and do a quick acting animation over 2-3 weeks.
- Grab a random rig online and audit it. (test every control and try a tricky pose or two)
- Pick a random emotion and do a quick 15 minute posing drill: 5 minutes to gather reference and 10 minutes to make the pose.
- Go through the blog archives or onto an online animation forum and offer some constructive critique on someone's animation work.

Drew- Final
Yo class, here's what is going to pretty close to what I will have tomorrow. I don't consider the animation complete; there are still some areas in the cat tail and the pick-up that I still find a bit messy.
I haven't been able to replace the sphere with the mouse because that rig is way too heavy and makes the scene nearly unworkable. I figure it would be best to spend my efforts on the two main characters.
Probably the hardest thing about this assignment was trying to make the pick-up believable. Most eagle attacks on land usually have the bird pouncing on the animal rather than picking it up in one swoop, which is what I wanted. I used a lot of reference from eagles catching fish and hoped I could implement it well for catching a cat on land. I feel pretty good about it, but I feel that there's something missing, something that could make it a bit more exciting.
Of course, I'm open to all ideas and feedback and it has been a pleasure being in this class with all of you.
Cheers,
Drew.

Michael Kinder - Fixed loth
I have fixed the Loth shader for the eyes.
This is for Taylor, who wanted the eyes fixed on Loth. All you other Loth users, can also have this file if you would like it.
The issue seems to be that someone convenetly removed the shader for the eye ball and replaced it with a generic round glowing red orb. This is currently the problem with the Loth character in the download section, that it has the correct eye shader removed. So if you would like to have the correct eyes for loth setup just email me: mkinder1219@gmail.com and I will send it to you. I would place it here but don't see a way to upload a file like that.
I will give this to Dave on Thursday as well to replace the one on the download section for future use.

Taylor Holmes: Leg test, and finals music
I'm trying something with the leg and want to see if you all think it works.
So I am testing to see if I can successfully make the leg look like it's idly looking for contact, without distracting from the main performance.
Now here is the same thing as the other video except the action on the main leg swing is smaller.
Which do you think is more effective? Number 1, 2, or neither?
Also, as a treat for finals, this should help make everything you are doing 10x more epic. It's a 2 hour video of the Lord of the Rings Symphony.

INSTRUCTOR POST - If you are graduating this term...
From Robert Steele:
A large percentage of graduating students have
still not submitted their Final Portfolio to the online Final Portfolio
Review area. They have already received notification of the need to do
this.
This WILL AFFECT THEIR ELIGIBILITY TO GRADUATE this semester.
Could you please announce in your classes that
Senior graduating in Spring and Summer 2012 need to submit their
portfolio to the online Review area in their online student profile to
graduate ASAP. (This does not apply to students that
have graduated in Fall2011) Again they should have already received
notification of this. Following is the email I will be emailing them
over the next few days. You can read it in class if you like. (Actually I
would prefer it.
J )
Also attached are the instruction for uploading in case any of them have not yet received it.
YOU ARE MISSING YOUR UNDERGRADUATE FINAL REVIEW PORTFOLIO. Either you have not submitted it to the
REVIEW area located in your online profile or you have published it yet by selecting the Publish button in the
REVIEW area in your online Student Profile.
Again you must submit to the REVIEW area and select
PUBLISH when you are done. Do not submit to the area marked
Portfolio
You MUST submit a Final Review Portfolio online
to be considered a candidate to Graduate if you are graduating in Spring
or Summer 2012.
Not submitting to the online portfolio review WILL AFFECT YOUR ELIGIBILITY TO GRADUATE this year.
In case you have not received it. Instructions for posting to the online Portfolio area are attached.

Just a quick reminder - next class I'm going to collect your current work-in-progress to generate a progress grade for April 29th. Be sure to have at the top of your folder a movie file of your latest non-cycling creature animation named <Last>_<First>.mov. Your grade will be based on your current progress relative to expectation.
By next class, you should have the physics and timing of your character's root and body with basic leg/limb mechanics. All the action should be clearly depicted and your camera(s) must be well composed and choreographed.

Tim Li_Fox Blocking2
Hey guys, hope you had a great break. This is what i have for my animation so far. Would love to hear what you guys think. Is the camera better? I haven't really figured out what i'm going to do with the ending since my animation is already 17 seconds. What do you guys think'? Thanks
Taylor: Loth Blocking
Alrighty ya'll, whatcha think? I am in the blocking stage, I started at the beginning and I've gotten up until Loth jumps back and takes his first set of steps. I have started messing with splines a little bit but not too much. Absolutely all critique is welcome.
Some of the area's I am concerned include: the head bumping the leaf, the amount for time it takes for Loth to react to the butterfly. Do you think he should jump away immediately or wait a second while the butterfly lands, then jump away. Also I'm not sure if he looks hesitant and curious enough when approaching the butterfly. I think slowing his walk when he approaches the leaf will make him look more cautious. What do you guys think?

I am in scripting class this semester and am trying to come up with

Wan Cheul Kim - Pawn animation
I'll work more on the timing of fox jumping and walking, and then get into the blocked motion.
Q to the class: I'm thinking of the creature to come out from the inside of the mountain thingy. Any body have any ideas how to add rock bashed open and scatter all over the place?

Ivania - Pawn animation
Hey guys!
Here's where I'm at with my animation. I want the lioness to be prowling with a small leap at the end. It's still in it's pawn stages, more or less, with some minimal keys thrown on the lioness. Let me know what you guys think!

Amelia - Eagle Leg Question

Does this leg in the Maya file look backwards to you? If so, has anyone been able to pose it this other way? Is there some pole vector or controller that I haven't found?

Non-linear layout
Hi everyone,
I wanted to post my layout for my non-linear assignment. In terms of composition, I am pretty set on what I have. However I was hoping that I could use it as reference to gauge my idea.
So the idea is that this car is driving along this jungle road. Suddenly, from the Bushes we can see Tiny the Gorilla. He jumps out of the bushes, screen left, onto the car crushing it. He then lets out a furious roar and jumps back into the jungle screen right.
Any thoughts on how to plus this, or if you think it works, or whatever would be greatly appreciated!

Walking to Mixamo
Just in case anyone rechecks here before they head over to Mixamo, Amelia and I will be walking from 180 New Montgomery over to the studio. We're leaving around 5pm-ish, if anyone wishes to stroll along side us. On the way back we're more than likely taking the K or T train from there[corner of 3rd and 20th] to Market. I believe it's $2 and a 17min ride to Market/Montgomery. Stronger in numbers! :D

Taylor's Tiny scripts
I'm starting to build a script library for Tiny. Is anybody else using that rig? If so I'll post whatever I make, and if you have any requests (control selection sets mostly) I'd be happy to do it. Just gauging interest here.
In fact, even if you're not using Tiny and just want to see what I did, let me know. I basically copied Davids selection scripts from Morpheus but I'd be happy to show anybody who missed that part in class. Don't miss out on setting these up. It's easy and saves you lots of time in the long run.
Lastly, I'm not too familiar with IK/FK matching switches. Would that be easy to apply to any rig? Thanks in advance for any pointers.

West - Simplify Curves
So just learned a new trick that works pretty well for this MoCap assignment. Select the Root, Spine, Neck and Head, select the curves in the Graph Editor, then go to Curves>Simplify Curve. This will get rid of a ton of keys and make cleaning up this shot much easier. I would NOT suggest using this on the Hands, Elbows, Feet and Knees cause they just get way too screwed up.
Before you do this, make sure you have Buffer Curve Snapshot in effect, so you can see the original curves and try to match them. If you don't know how to do that, Select all controls> Select Curves in Graph Editor>Curves>Buffer Curve Snapshot>View>Show Buffer Curves.
Hope this helps!

Nick - Mocap
Heres the first shot. Didn't know which camera to use so I chose the perspective. According to all of you was the head/neck the most annoying peice to animate.

Nick - Screwy "Baked" Mocap File
I'm having trouble with the Mocap file in the "Pick Up" folder. When you open it up in 2012 the file is supposed to run from frame 1-240 but the Norman character in it only moves up to frame 190.
Does anyone have a solution to this?

Sean - Aaron Koressel Scripts
Hey everyone, here are some amazing scripts from Aaron Koressel, Pixar animator. He developed these scripts for himself in Maya and implemented them at Pixar in their own software. Click on the "show demo" button to see what each script does. I would make sure you grab the ackPushPull and ackNegateKeys, they'll change your life, as an animator at least.

Feedback would be stupendous!
Happy Animating!
Edit* Well his color is somewhat better, but his hair piece seems to be transparent. No idea what happened. :/
